What happens during your child's hearing aid fitting appointment?
If a hearing loss was identified during your child’s Hearing Assessment your audiologist will have spoken to you about the benefits of hearing aids. After selecting the hearing aids that are right for your child, your audiologist will see you and your child for their Hearing Aid Fitting. During this appointment their hearing aids will be tailored to their ears and their hearing to make sure they are working at their best, giving them access to all the speech sounds they need to support their development.
The next stage in personalising your child’s hearing aids to their specific needs is to make sure that the sound of the hearing aids is adjusted to the shape of their ears. Because everybody’s ear canals are a different shape, the sound from the hearing aids will echo differently, meaning that the sound that reaches their eardrums will be different. Real Ear Measurements (REMs) or Real Ear to Coupler Differences (RECDs) allow your audiologist to measure the sound as it reaches your child’s eardrums and to make sure that this echo is compensated for. This is particularly important for children because their ears are still growing and changing.
Your audiologist will now use a small camera to look inside your child’s ears, just like they did at their hearing assessment. They will check that there have been no changes over the last week or two, and that their ear canals are nice and clear. Once this has been confirmed your audiologist will place the hearing aids in your child’s ears without switching them on and will make any adjustments necessary to ensure that they are comfortable and secure.

Once the hearing aids are all programmed up your audiologist will repeat some of the speech tests that your child had at their hearing assessment to measure the improvement in their functional hearing with the new hearing aids. If there are any adjustments needed to ensure the best balance of listening comfort and sound clarity your audiologist will make those adjustments now.
The hearing aids are all set up, now you and your child just need to know how to use them! Your audiologist will explain to you simply and clearly how to insert the hearing aids into your child’s ears, how to control them and how to maintain them to ensure that they keep working as well as possible.
While your child is getting used to their hearing aids you can see your audiologist as often as you need to in order to make sure that they are getting the benefit expected from their new hearing aids. To begin with they will make an appointment to see you and your child in 1 week and will arrange to phone you in 1-2 days time to check that your child is getting on well with your hearing aids and that you don’t have any immediate questions.
When the appointment begins your audiologist will start by checking whether you or your child have any questions about anything that you spoke about during their last appointment and whether you are both still happy with the chosen style and model of hearing aids. They will then explain what will happen during this appointment and let your child know that they can ask any questions they have whenever they want to. You are of course also welcome to ask any questions you have. The priority for this appointment is for you everyone to feel comfortable and confident with your child’s new hearing aids!
