What is included in your yearly appointments?
Once your hearing aids have been fitted it’s important that they are maintained to keep you hearing well. During your annual hearing aid review appointments your audiologist will perform a new hearing assessment and will then update your hearing aids to take any changes in your hearing levels into account.
At the beginning of your appointment, your audiologist will begin by asking you how you (and your family!) have been finding your hearing since your last appointment. They will also speak to you about how you have been getting on with both the comfort and the sound of your hearing aids.
Your audiologist will use a small camera to look inside your ears. They will check that there have been no changes since your last appointment, and that your ear canals are nice and clear. Once this has been checked your audiologist will examine the fit of your hearing aids when in your ears to see whether any alterations are needed to keep them fitting comfortably.
If it has been over 6 months since your last appointment, or if you feel that your hearing has changed since then, your audiologist will test your hearing levels as well as your un-aided speech perception. This allows any changes in your hearing to be quickly detected so that they can be compensated for, keeping you hearing as well as possible.
Once your hearing levels have been checked your audiologist will make any adjustments necessary, taking your feedback into account to make sure that you are happy and comfortable with the sound of your hearing aids.
To make sure that the adjustments are working well your audiologist will repeat some of the speech tests that you have had previously to measure any changes in your functional hearing with the newly adjusted aids. If there are any further adjustments needed to ensure the best balance of listening comfort and sound clarity your audiologist will make those adjustments now.
Before you leave your audiologist will agree with you a plan for your future care. If you are happy with the sound and comfort of your hearing aids then normally they will recommend that you come back for a further review appointment in 1 year. However, if you feel that you would like to be seen more regularly than this then that is no problem at all!
